Daycare vs Nanny vs Family Care: An Honest Comparison for Dhaka Parents
When you go back to work, you usually have three real options for your child’s care: a daycare centre, a nanny or house-helper at home, or family — often grandparents. Each has genuine strengths and genuine downsides. Here’s an honest comparison to help you weigh what matters most for your family.
Family care (grandparents or relatives)
The good: deep love and trust, familiar surroundings, flexibility, and usually little or no cost. For many families it’s the most emotionally reassuring option.
The trade-offs: it can be physically demanding for older relatives, especially with an active toddler. Approaches to routine, learning and discipline may differ from yours. And a child cared for one-to-one at home misses out on playing and socialising with other children — an increasingly important gap as they approach preschool age.
A nanny or house-helper at home
The good: one-to-one attention, your child stays in their own environment, and you can shape the routine around your family.
The trade-offs: everything rests on one person, so illness or a sudden departure can leave you stranded. There’s usually no backup supervision and no easy way to see how the day is really going. Quality and reliability vary widely, and again, your child spends the day without other children, structure, or planned learning.
A daycare centre
The good: trained caregivers rather than a single individual, structured days full of play and early learning, the company of other children, and the social skills that come with it. A good centre offers safety systems a home rarely can — secure entry, continuous supervision, hygiene routines, trained staff — and it doesn’t collapse if one person is unwell. Many centres also keep you updated through the day.
The trade-offs: it’s a shared setting, so your child isn’t the only one being cared for, and there’s an adjustment period at the start. It’s a monthly cost. And you’ll want to choose carefully, because centres vary — which is exactly why we wrote How to Tell if a Daycare Is Actually Safe.
So which is right?
There’s no universal winner — it depends on what your child needs most and what you value. But a pattern we see often: family or a nanny can feel safest for a tiny baby, while a good daycare becomes increasingly valuable as a child grows and starts to need other children, structure, and preparation for school. Many Dhaka families end up combining options over time.
Where Happy’s fits
If you’re leaning towards a centre, what we offer is the best of that model: experienced caregivers, small group sizes so your child is genuinely seen, a structured day of play-based learning, strong safety systems, and regular communication so you’re never in the dark. And uniquely, for children who need it, specialist speech-delay support within the same nurturing day.
