How to Tell if a Daycare Is Actually Safe (Beyond the Tour)
Any daycare can look lovely for the twenty minutes you’re standing in it. Fresh paint and smiling staff are easy to arrange. Real safety is about what happens on the other 364 days, when no parent is watching. Here’s how to see past the tour and judge whether a place is genuinely safe.
1. Can you actually see inside — even when you’re not there?
This is the big one. Ask whether the centre has CCTV, and crucially, whether parents can access it. A place confident in its care has nothing to hide from the people who matter most. 2. Who can walk in and out?
Safety starts at the door. Ask about entry and exit control: how do they ensure no unauthorised person reaches the children, and that no child leaves with the wrong adult? Secure, controlled access isn’t paranoia — it’s the baseline. Ours is covered on our Safety & Facilities page.
3. What are the group sizes, really?
A child who is one of too many is a child who can be missed. Small group sizes aren’t just nicer — they’re safer, because attentive supervision is only possible when adults aren’t stretched thin. Ask the actual number of children per caregiver, and watch whether the room feels calm or chaotic.
4. Are staff trained for emergencies?
Ask plainly: are caregivers trained in paediatric first aid and emergency response? Accidents with small children are inevitable somewhere; what matters is that the adults know exactly what to do when one happens. Our staff are first-aid trained, and continuous adult supervision is standard during all hours.
5. Is hygiene a system or an afterthought?
Young children share everything, including germs. Look for daily hygiene routines and health screening, clean nap spaces, and sensible food handling — not just a tidy floor on tour day. Ask how they keep illness from spreading through the group.
6. Will they keep you informed and hear your concerns?
A safe place is a transparent place. You should be able to raise a worry easily and get a real response. Ask how they communicate day to day, and how a parent would flag a concern. Our approach is regular updates on your child, plus a direct channel for questions, suggestions and concerns — because safety and openness go together.
The quiet test: how do they answer hard questions?
Here’s the real tell. Ask a centre a pointed safety question and watch how they respond. A trustworthy place welcomes it and answers specifically. A place that gets defensive, vague, or waves you off is telling you something important. Good care has nothing to fear from a careful parent.
